Verify My Real Estate License Status in New York

As a busy real estate professional in New York, the thought enters your mind, "I think my license expires soon, but when?" Or maybe you hold a license but are not actively transacting in the industry right now. Your real estate license is your asset and missing a renewal deadline could mean costly delays, lost income, and even potential fines. The good news is your license status is right at your fingertips, and without needing to login anywhere!

Real Estate Licenses in New York

The New York Department of State (DOS) issues and regulates real estate licenses, requiring all salespersons and brokers to renew before the license expires every 2 years. If you let your license lapse, you won’t be able to legally work until it’s reactivated. Even worse, you could face penalties or additional education requirements if you do not renew according to NY regulations or if you go too long without renewing.

Empire Learning is a NY DOS-approved continuing education provider. Visit our NY web page for more information about your NY real estate continuing education requirements and license renewal.

How to Check Your License Status and Expiration Date

Go the the NY DOS Public License Search, a free online search tool where you can verify a license status by name, license type, license number, city or county. To search for a business name, click on Search by Name, then search for an individual or business license.

This tool provides real-time information on whether your license is active, inactive, or expired. If your expiration date is approaching, now is the time to take action.

Planning Ahead for Renewal

Don’t wait until the last minute to renew your license. The renewal process requires you to complete the necessary continuing education (CE) requirements and submit your renewal application to New York DOS through the eAccessNY portal.

It’s best to set reminders for yourself well in advance. Many real estate professionals schedule a renewal review at least three to six months before their expiration date to ensure they have enough time to complete the required CE courses and submit their application without stress.
