The New York Department of State (DOS) Division of Licensing Services oversees the renewal process, requiring that all licensed professionals stay compliant with current regulations and educational requirements. Here, we break it down with this step-by-step guide to renewing your New York real estate license.
Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline
Your New York real estate license is valid for two years from the date of issuance. To avoid any lapse in licensure, it is best to submit your renewal application before your expiration date. You can check your license status and expiration date using the eAccessNY system, the New York State online licensing portal.
Step 2: Complete Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
Before renewing your license, you must complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education (CE). The required coursework includes a minimum of 11.5 hours of required curriculum in the topics of Fair Housing (3 hours), Ethical Business Practices (2.5 hours), Recent Legal Matters (1 hour), Implicit Bias Training (2 hours), and Cultural Competency Training (2 hours). The remaining hours may be from any DOS-approved courses.
CE Exemptions
If you are a licensed attorney in good standing with the New York State Bar, you are exempt from the CE requirement.

Step 3: Submit Your Renewal Application Online with DOS
Once you have completed your CE requirements, you must submit your renewal application with NY DOS. To renew with NY DOS, follow these steps:
- Login to eAccessNY. From the Main Menu page click on “List of Licenses (Access your license here).” A listing of all your License(s) and License Number(s) (UID#’s)will be listed. If you have more than one license, click on the license you wish to renew.
- Click on “Renew License” and then “Next Step” to renew the license.
If the Office/Sponsorship information listed is incorrect, DO NOT continue with this renewal until your new broker has submitted a change of association for you. If you are changing association or the business address, those changes must be performed, by the principal broker, prior to renewing your license online. Proceed with this online renewal ONLY if the information listed is correct. - Answer the questions and press “Next Step” to continue. If you have not completed the continuing education and you continue to renew with NY DOS, your license will not be renewed until you submit your course completion certificates to NY DOS. This is not the standard process so anticipate a longer renewal process if you renew with DOS prior to completing your continuing education.
- Affirm the application by checking the “I Agree” box and press “Next Step” to continue. When you affirm your application, you are indicating that you have met the requirements for renewal. Therefore, your continuing education must be completed prior to submitting your online renewal.
- Enter your credit card details and press “Submit” ONLY ONCE to submit your payment. Your card will be charged with the total amount displayed.
- You will get a “Confirmation” page indicating your renewal has been submitted. Print the page for your records. Submission does not constitute an approval. Your renewal application will be reviewed by the Department to make sure it is complete and meets the qualifications for renewal.
Step 4: Confirm Your License Renewal
Once your renewal application and payment are processed, NY DOS will issue a new license with an updated expiration date. You should receive an email confirmation, and you can download a copy of your renewed license via eAccessNY. You can also login anytime to verify that your expiration date has been updated to reflect another two years of licensure.
Can I Access eAccessNY if My License Expired?
Yes. If you fail to renew your license before the expiration date, you may still login to eAccessNY to access your account. While you cannot legally practice real estate once your license expires, you have a two-year period to complete the required CE and submit your renewal (and pay the fee) to return your license to active status.
If more than two years have passed since your license expired, you must retake the pre-licensing course and pass the state exam to obtain a new license.
