Reinstating your real estate license in New Jersey doesn't have to be a hassle—if you know what steps to take. Whether you missed your renewal deadline or let your license expire, getting back on track is possible with the right information. We’ll walk you through the process, deadlines, and requirements so you can reinstate your license smoothly and avoid costly mistakes.
Current Renewal Cycle CE Reminder
To renew your license without a penalty, you must complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) by April 30, 2025. Procrastinating can be costly—if you don’t finish by this date, you’ll be hit with a $200 late fee.
If you don’t complete your CE by April 30, you can still renew your license—but only if you finish by June 30, 2025. The $200 late fee will apply, but your license will remain eligible for renewal as long as your CE is completed on time.

What If Your License Expired in 2023?
If you were actively licensed during the 2021-2023 license term but failed to renew by June 30, 2023, your license is now expired. However, you can still reinstate it! The deadline for reinstatement is June 30, 2025.
How to Apply for Reinstatement
Online reinstatement is available for many applicants, but paper applications may be required for certain cases. Online renewal and reinstatement for New Jersey licenses can be done in the NJREC online portal.
For salespersons and broker-salespersons, reinstatement can often be completed online. Here’s how:
- Complete your CE credits
- Answer the qualifying questions online (only the applicant can do this—brokers cannot complete it on behalf of licensees)
- Have your Broker of Record submit the reinstatement application through the Online Licensing Services system
If your application cannot be completed online, the broker will be notified and must submit a paper application.
Special Cases: Referral & Broker License Reinstatement
For referral agents, reinstatement does not require CE. However, if a referral agent wants to change their license type to a salesperson, broker-salesperson, or broker, they must complete the required CE before applying for the change.
Referral agents can reinstate their license by completing the necessary application through the Online Licensing Services system or by contacting the Licensing Services Bureau – Real Estate at (609) 292-7272 (Prompt 1) for assistance.
For Brokers & Business Entities, to reinstate, contact the Licensing Services Bureau – Real Estate at (609) 292-7272 (Prompt 1) to obtain the correct application.
